#0toMarathon: Declaration

"We choose to go... not because [it is] easy, but because [it is] hard, because that goal will serve to measure and organize the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win"
-John Fitzgerald Kennedy

I am constantly amazed at what humans can do. There are people that can lift cars, there are people that can do complex problems in their head faster than a calculator, there are people who can run 100 miles, there are people who can invent things that change the world. Looking at myself I realize I am blessed to have the talents and abilities that I have. All things considered, however, I try to avoid complacency. If I'm not progressing, I'm not happy. I also know that there is no progression without struggle. There is a whole world of possibilities out there and I want to experience as many of them as I can. This is why I've decided to embark on this challenge.

I know there are people out there who want to do things but don't believe they can. I hope that by trying to accurately document everything it takes to go from 0 to a Marathon, can motivate at least one person to believe in themselves and go out and do something amazing. I want to prove that you can do anything you set your mind to.

Some people might think it's not that hard to run a marathon. Good for you, what do you want? You want me to give you a trophy? For me it will be a challenge. I'm not so much worried about the distance. 26.2 miles is far but it's not THAT far. I anticipate my biggest challenge will be enduring through the training. Consistently waking up early to get my runs in might literally kill me. The morning is for sleeping and I haven't mastered the art of turning off my alarm while I'm still sleeping for nothing. Finding the energy and motivation to keep going when I want to stay up late and hang with my friends or when I have a long day of work and just want to relax will be as hard as putting a square peg in a round hole. But I got sandpaper and I'm willing to sand down those corners so it fits. So this is where you come in!

One of the main reasons I'm documenting this so heavily is so I can be held responsible. I need you (all my internet friends) to hold me to this. If I've been slacking on training or anything else, call me out. I'm sure in the moment it will be hard to make the decision to keep pushing which is why I need all the support I can get.

As for sponsors I'm still currently without shoes and anything else for that matter that runners need. If you know anyone or any company that would be willing to help sponsor me with anything ( shoes, shorts, race fees, sweet headbands etc.) shoot them my way. I'm also throwing around the idea of raising donation money for a good local cause. If anyone has any suggestions for that let me know as well. Contact me through any of my social media or email me straight at bradensthompson@gmail.com

I will of course be sure to include all sponsors in my efforts of weekly documenting this journey. As a marketing student I'll be sure to get it out there in an entertaining way. If you don't believe me here's my declaration video for the 0 to marathon challenge:

    1. I'm shooting for St. George. Not sure how the lottery works for it but if I don't get picked then I'll probably do the Top of Utah.
